Personalized Medicine for Diagnostic and Therapy
Personalized medicine revolutionizes healthcare by tailoring treatment to each individual's unique genetic makeup, lifestyle, and environment. By analyzing a patient's genetic markers, doctors can predict disease susceptibility, select the most effective therapies, and minimize side effects. Treatments like those used for breast cancer that target the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) or tests that look at specific markers in tumors to diagnose cancer are examples of personalized medicine in action. It shifts healthcare from a one-size-fits-all model to precise, targeted interventions, improving outcomes and quality of life for patients in a cost-effective way.
Personalized medicine is poised to shape the future of healthcare. In 2023, the U.S. market was worth about $168.45 billion. Experts predict it could grow to nearly $373.96 billion by 2033, with an annual growth rate of 8.5% from 2024 to 2033.

Biographies
Katja Hanack is a biologist with over 20 years of experience in antibody discovery. After earning her PhD in 2007, she established her own academic group at the University of Potsdam, where she developed a novel mammalian display system for the selection of antibody-secreting cells. In 2014, leveraging this technology, she founded new/era/mabs. As CEO, she has since been providing scientists with customized antibody packages to support their research and development efforts. Katja Hanack has authored more than 40 scientific publications and is involved in over five patents. She holds an industry-endowed professorship at the University of Potsdam, where she is actively engaged in teaching and mentoring young scientists. Since last year, she has been a visiting scholar at the Stanford School of Medicine and participates in the SPARK program, contributing her expertise to support translational sciences.
Sudha Krishnan is a Neuroscientist by training with 16 years of experience in the Life Science space. She started her career at Massachusetts General Hospital, and moved to AbbVie, where she worked on the development of next generation Humira. At AbbVie, she was part of the team that engineered a less immunogenic form of Humira and earned a US patent for this work. She has spent the past 10 years in Scientific Sales/Business Development, having supported technologies such as Spatial Genomics, Proteomics and CRISPR. She currently is the Vice President of Business Development at Abzena, a biologic and bioconjugate CDMO. In this role, she works very closely with start-ups and mid-size biotech companies that are developing a therapeutic biologic.
Dianne Keen-Kim is a clinician, scientist, and medical laboratory executive with >20 years of strategic growth and resource optimization experience in the medical device and diagnostics industries. Her varied experience includes scaling automation through AI/ML, R&D, quality, regulatory, and clinical trials leadership within start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Dr. Keen-Kim has built and launched 5 clinical laboratories, performed diligence for M&A and capital raises, and served as an Executive in Residence for UCSF Innovation Ventures. She is the 2024 National President-Elect for Women in Bio, the premier organization of professionals committed to promoting careers, leadership, and entrepreneurship for all women in the life sciences. Her operating roles include: Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pathology, Stanford University School of Medicine, SVP of Laboratory Affairs & Quality at Natera, and Founder CEO of Arete Diagnostics, Inc. Dr. Keen-Kim earned degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, completed medical genetics fellowships at UCLA, and is certified and licensed to direct medical laboratories in all 50 states.
Christian Apfel is a California-licensed physician who has taught at UCSF for over a decade and clinical researcher with 100+ publications including the New England Journal of Medicine. He is an impact investor, board member and advisor to over a dozen of life science startups. Dr. Apfel founded SageMedic and developed the Sage Oncotest™ which pioneers a 3D microtumor functional profiling platform designed to complement genomic testing.
Thomas Koehnke completed medical school at the University of Goettingen, Germany and performed laboratory research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the Charité University hospital in Berlin, for which he received his doctorate from the University of Berlin. He performed his clinical training in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Munich, Germany, where he was co-investigator for several clinical trials studying treatments for patients with leukemia. Following this, he trained as postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Ravi Majeti at Stanford studying pre-leukemic evolution and progression into leukemia. He currently works as an Instructor at the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Stanford developing novel approaches to perform prospective genetic experiments directly in patient specimens.
